HarperCollins Raises Bar on Book Cover Art
Sandstorm, by national bestselling author James Rollins, to be released in May 2005, will have a lenticular cover created for the adult action-adventure market. Avon, an imprint of HarperCollinsPublishers, will be releasing it as a limited edition for initial orders only; subsequent reprints will be produced using traditional mass market special effects.
Although the basic principles behind lenticular imagery are not new, the groundbreaking development of advanced interlacing software and thinner lens material have made it possible for book publishers to consider using it.
Lenticular imaging is created by interlacing multiple images through specialized software and printing them on the reverse side of a special plastic lens. The lens is made up of tiny ridges that reveal one image at a time, giving the illusion of depth, motion, morph, zoom or flip. The most dramatic results come about when working with highly detailed layered artwork on disc. The transferred image then has to be adapted to withstand the variables of the high-speed binding line used in mass market book manufacturing.
"With James Rollins’ new science-based action-adventure thriller Sandstorm, we were looking for a special effect for the mass market cover that would set him apart from the rest in that heavily marketed genre," said Darlene DeLillo, Senior Vice President and Deputy Publisher of Avon. "It will also appeal to that same audience who enjoy a blend of technology and entertainment."
